ABOUT BERKELEY

Berkeley Parking Guide About Berkeley Berkeley is a city on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay in Northern California. Its neighbors to the south are the cities of Oakland and Emeryville. Berkeley is the site of the University of California, Berkeley, the oldest of the University of California system, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Berkeley has a cool summer Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and wet winters. Berkeley has one of the highest rates of bicycle and pedestrian commuting in the nation. Berkeley is the safest city of its size in California for pedestrians and cyclists, considering the number of injuries per pedestrian and cyclist, rather than per capita.

Parking in Berkeley Berkeley's convenient and central location in the S.F. Bay Area makes it a regional transportation hub.

Metered Parking The City of Berkeley currently uses two types of meters: the Cale pay-and-display stations (ParkEZ Stations) and the Duncan EagleSingle Meters. Parking meters are enforced 9:00am to 6:00pm. If you encounter a meter which is broken or not working, please report this to the following information line (510) 981-CITY (2489). Even if the meter is broken, it is not legal to park in the space longer than the meter time limit, when the meter would normally be in effect. The time limit, such as 1 hour or 2 hours, is shown on the meter and often on street signs as well.

Meters are not enforced on the following days:

  • New Year's Day, January 1 (Holiday observed on Monday if it falls on Sunday)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Third Monday in January
  • President's Day, Third Monday in February
  • Memorial Day, Last Monday in May
  • Independence Day, July 4 (Holiday observed on Friday if it falls on a Sunday)
  • Labor Day, First Monday in September
  • Indigenous People's Day, Second Monday in October
  • Veterans Day, November 11 (Holiday observed on Monday if it falls on Sunday)
  • Thanksgiving Day, Fourth Thursday in November
  • Christmas Day, December 25 (Holiday observed on Monday if it falls on Sunday)

Off Street Parking (Garages & Lots) The City of Berkeley owns and manages three parking garages and several off-street parking lots.

There are a plenty of garage parking options available in and around the city. One may choose to park in a garage if the parking requirement is for more than just an hour or two. Parking Garages are highly suitable for both short and long term parking requirements.

Best Parking helps you choose the best suitable parking facility for off street parking via an interactive map. Most garages are suitable options for economical long term parking.
