ABOUT MADISON

Madison Parking Guide

About Madison Madison is the capital of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Madison is located in the center of Dane County in south-central Wisconsin, 77 miles (124 km) west of Milwaukee and 122 miles (196 km) northwest of Chicago. The city completely surrounds the smaller Town of Madison, the City of Monona, and the villages of Maple Bluff and Shorewood Hills. Madison shares borders with its largest suburb, Sun Prairie, and three other communities, Middleton, McFarland and Fitchburg.

Wisconsin state government and the University of Wisconsin-Madison remain the two largest Madison employers. However, Madison's economy today is evolving from a government-based economy to a consumer services and high-tech base, particularly in the health, biotech and advertising sectors.

Parking in Madison

Metered parking Parking meters are intended for short-term parking. The purpose of time limits on parking meters is to ensure that parking spaces regularly become available for customers of area businesses and visitors to the area. It is illegal to deposit additional coins in the meter after the time limit has been reached. You must leave a parking space when the time limit posted on the meter has been reached. Vehicles parked longer than the posted time limit are subject to citation.

Meters located on City streets are enforced from 8 am to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday. Many parking meters note that they are not enforced on "City Holidays". City holidays are as follows:

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday (the third Monday in January)
  • Memorial Day (the last Monday in May)
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

It is important to note that there are more holidays that are classified as Federal Holidays (i.e. President's Day, Veteran's Day) that are NOT city holidays. Parking meters ARE enforced on these days!

Be aware that some meters have special restrictions such as "No Stopping, Standing or Parking" during stated hours of peak traffic.

Parking in Garages There are a plenty of garage parking options available in and around the city. One may choose to park in a garage if the parking requirement is for more than just an hour or two. Parking Garages are highly suitable for both short and long term parking requirements.

Best Parking helps you choose the best suitable parking facility for off street parking via an interactive map. Most garages are suitable options for economical long term parking.
