New York Parking Guide
About New York
One of the thirteen original colonies of the United States, New York City was named after the Duke of York. Nicknamed as “Empire State” by the first President of the United States, George Washington, New York is the third most populous state after California and Texas. Landscaping the global economic turfs of international business and commerce exemplifies a conglomerate trilogy which the city shares with London and Tokyo.
The estuarial city across Hudson River, New York is home to some of the most remarkable architectural feats of the world including the Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty. NYC is the most populous city in the United States. The state of New York is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City.
New York has a humid continental climate. Weather in New York is heavily influenced by two continental air masses: a warm, humid one from the southwest and a cold, dry one from the northwest.
Parking in New York
The geographical expanse of the New York City segregates into five boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Most of the commercial areas in these boroughs are flocked with offices, landmarks, hospitals, broadway/off-broadway theatres, shopping areas, hotels, museums and parks. Thus, ascertaining an available parking space on the streets can be a baffling and time-consuming endeavor.
As per the last survey by the New York City Department of City Planning, nearly 36 per cent of the city’s population is foreign-born. This diversity of cultural origination instills a greater need for the legislation to have appropriate driving regulations and correspondingly parking system practices in place for the city.
Metered and Alternate Side Parking in NYC
Rates for parking vary across the five boroughs. Parking rates are posted on each parking meter, and the legal parking duration is posted in the top left hand corner of the green meter signs. Legal parking durations vary from 1 hour to 12 hours. Parking meters do not have to be paid on Sundays. Always check signs carefully before parking.
The City suspends alternate side parking regulations, for both street cleaning purposes and traffic flow, on 34 legal and religious holidays. New York City uses some of the most sophisticated parking equipment available. All meters accept coin payments. Select meters accept credit cards. Many meters allow you to pre-pay for parking using the NYC Parking Card, which you can purchase online. PARK Smart is a program developed with the community to make parking easier while reducing congestion and improving safety. PARK Smart aims to increase the number of available metered parking spaces by encouraging motorists to park no longer than necessary. The meter rate is higher when demand for parking is greatest and decreases when demand is lower.
Parking Garages and lots
With greatly busy streets, it may be better to find parking garages, rather than to keep looking for street parking in NYC. It may also be worthwhile to scout around for deals: some garage companies (normally the larger ones) offer discounted rates in the form of parking discounts and parking coupons for frequent customers.
Visit Bestparking.com to view and compare the long term parking options in NYC and Manhattan. The interactive map-based interface helps to better understand and choose the right option. Some garages will offer discounts if you commit to a six-to-twelve-month contract. So, go ahead and compare the available options.
Parking Regulations and Tickets
Parking enforcement is the responsibility of the New York City Police Department. All of New York City is a designated Tow Away Zone under the State's Vehicle and Traffic Law. On major legal holidays stopping, standing and parking are permitted except in areas where stopping, standing and parking rules are in effect seven days a week.
Parking Signs
If there is more than one sign posted for the same area, the more restrictive one is the one in effect. If a sign is missing on a block, the remaining posted regulations are the ones that are in effect. Please check the entire block and read all signs carefully before you park.
