About Ann Arbor Ann Arbor is a city in the US state of Michigan. It is 35 miles north of the Ohio border and 45 miles west of Detroit. Ann Arbor is often abbreviated as AA or A2.

Ann Arbor is a picturesque city surrounding the University of Michigan. It has a strong bent toward the arts, and an attractive and pedestrian-friendly downtown. Visitors enjoy the city's wonderful sidewalk cafe dining, unique shops, lots of bookstores, and abundant cultural opportunities.

Ann Arbor has a typically Midwestern humid continental climate. There are four distinct seasons: winters are cold with moderate to heavy snowfall, while summers are very warm and humid; in between, spring and autumn are short but mild.

The University of Michigan shapes Ann Arbor's economy significantly. It employs about 30,000 workers, including about 12,000 in the medical center. High tech, health services and biotechnology are other major components of the city's economy; numerous medical offices, laboratories, and associated companies are located in the city. Automobile manufacturers, such as General Motors and Visteon, also employ residents.

Parking in Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority (DDA) manages the parking facilities in the city. DDA managed parking facilities are marked by white signs with a green letter P (lots) or blue signs with a white P (structures).

The hourly parking lot rate is $1.40/hour ($1.60 after 3 hours). The hourly parking structure rate is $1.20/hour. Operating hours vary.

Residential Parking Permits The Residential Parking Permit (RPP) program allows vehicles owned by residents to park in an RPP neighborhood for the posted time limit without being ticketed.

If your neighborhood is participating in an RPP Program you will need to acquire and display a residential parking permit decal for every vehicle that will park on neighborhood streets during the specified enforcement period.

Parking Meters Rates at the 1,750 metered curbside spaces in the downtown and campus area are $1.50/hour. Street meters are enforced Mon.-Sat. 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Meter cash cards can be used instead of coins at every city parking meter.

Many meters have been converted to solar-powered "e-park" pay stations. Each pay station is located near a grouping of spaces, but you can pay and add time at any machine or by phone (1-888-450-PARK: first-time users must be parked in a space and set up an account). E-Park machines accept coins and credit or debit cards (but not meter cash cards).

Parking tickets can be paid in 4 ways:

• on the city's website, a2gov.org (credit card only, $3.50 additional charge per citation)
• in person at the Customer Service Center, City Hall, 301 E. Huron
• at drop boxes at E. Ann and S. Fifth (drive-by 24-hour access), the police desk on the 2nd floor of the Justice Center (only in the case of vehicle impoundment), or on the north end of the lobby (check or money order only)
• by mail, addressed to City of Ann Arbor Processing Center, P.O. Box 2066, Tarrytown, NY 10591 (check or money order only). Postmarks are accepted as evidence of timely payment.

If your vehicle vanishes, call the Ann Arbor Police Department front desk (794-6920) to find out whether it was towed.
